Studies indicate that Computer Vision Syndrome affects about 90% of people who spend three hours or more at the computer.

What is CVS – Computer Vision Syndrome?

The popularization of the use of electronic display equipment, such as computers, mobile phones, smartphones or tablets, has gradually come to demand a greater visual effort from its users.

The visual impairments and their symptoms related to this misuse were referred by specialists as Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS ) .

According to the US National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, CVS affects about 90% of people who spend three hours or more at the computer, and female users have a higher incidence of symptoms.

What are the factors that can contribute to the development of CVS ?

In addition to factors related to environmental conditions (lighting and humidity) or ergonomics (posture, accessibility, among others), the following risk factors are also considered:

  • poorly corrected refractive states
  • accommodation disorders
  • eye disorders such as allergies or dry eye syndrome
  • contact lens wear
  • general health and eye changes

What are the symptoms?

According to published studies, the biggest contribution to CVS symptoms is dry eye. However, signs and symptoms of CVS also include:

  • eye irritation
  • ocular hyperemia (redness)
  • eye itching
  • visual fatigue
  • photophobia (light sensitivity)
  • sensation of heaviness in the eyelids or frontal region
  • headaches
  • pain in the shoulders, spine, legs, etc

How to prevent?

Eye therapies should be combined with the adjustment of ergonomic conditions in the workplace

It is recommended that for every 20 minutes in front of a screen you should focus on an object at 20 meters for 20 seconds (20-20-20 rule). Take this time to stretch your legs, shoulders and neck!

Proper lighting should be provided, and the use of anti-glare filters, ergonomic screen positioning and regular pauses can help improve visual comfort. The use of lubricating eye drops and eyeglasses with proper computer filters will also alleviate the symptoms of CVS .
